At Equinix, we are protecting our collective future by partnering with like-minded organizations and companies to advance clean and renewable energy policies, buying practices and innovation while greening supply chains worldwide. As part of our commitment to advocacy and collaboration, we are educating industry leaders on how to purchase renewable energy and publicly advocating for increasing access to renewables on the grid for all customers and consumers of electricity. We believe in the power of connection and when companies work together, collectively we can make more progress on the world’s most pressing environmental issues.
Equinix is a founding member and sits on the Board of Directors of the Renewable Energy Buyer’s Alliance (REBA), an alliance of large clean energy buyers, developers and service providers working to move markets towards a renewable energy future. REBA sponsors periodic boot camps and biannual meetings for potential buyers of renewable energy to learn about strategies for purchasing renewable energy. We believe collaboration and education reduce the barriers to renewable energy adoption, and we encourage our peers and partners to set renewable energy targets and join REBA.
“With REBA, we are bringing the buying power of large energy consumers together to change markets. Equinix was one of our earliest members and the first in their industry to publicly commit to a 100% renewable energy goal.”
– Miranda Ballentine, REBA CEO
Dominion Energy is Equinix’s regulated utility provider in the Ashburn, Virginia region. As a large Dominion customer, Equinix collaborated with other major data center and internet companies to encourage Dominion to develop more renewable energy, such as wind farms and solar plants, on its grid. During Dominion’s 2018 Integrated Resource Planning (IRP) process and subsequent resubmission, Equinix stood with companies, including: AWS, Apple, Iron Mountain and Salesforce, to ask Dominion to offer a “clean, flexible and dynamic grid – replete with renewable energy and modern energy technologies.”
In 2019, Equinix joined Northern Virginia Data Center Coalition (DCC) as a board member, where we work to advance the interests of the data center community and advocate for a strong business climate, policies and investments, including increased access to renewable energy.
Equinix was recently named Co-Chair of DCC’s Community Engagement Committee which will work to determine how the DCC and its membership can best support and engage in the Northern Virginia community and beyond.
The European Data Centre Association (EUDCA) represents the interests of the European commercial data center operator community, both politically and commercially. Equinix is directly engaged with the EUDCA, contributing to policy work at a European level that is shaping the data center industry of the future – one which is community-oriented and supports the essential evolution of the industry’s facilities. This includes everything from continuing to deliver energy efficiency to defining strategies to completely transform the industry to rely on renewable carbon-free power and embrace opportunities to reinsert captured heat into communities. Our vision is to be fully integrated in the green grid of the future.
Equinix is a member of the Dutch Data Center Association (DDA), where we work with other companies to enhance the data center sector’s profile within the Netherlands.
